The Muse · Discipline II

THE MERMAID

Where the Trial crowns the athlete, the Muse crowns the artist — the one so at home in the water they look like they belong to it. Judged not on depth, but on grace.

The Art Of The Water

BREATH ·
GRACE · STILLNESS

No tank. One breath. The Muse is freediving turned to art — the mastery of holding your calm, your line and your beauty underwater, where the smallest struggle shows. The same standard as the Trial, measured a different way.

The Format You Own

FOURTEEN
DISCIPLINES

Fourteen tests of the water-artist — mirrored to the Trial's fourteen. Local events run the Standard Six; the World Final runs all fourteen.

Breath & Control
M01
Static Grace
Timed + Judged
Hold a single breath, motionless in a chosen pose. Scored on duration and absolute stillness — no struggle, no drift.
M02
Dynamic Glide
Measured
Cover the most horizontal distance underwater on one breath with a monofin — distance, plus the fluidity of the dolphin kick.
M03
The Descent
Judged
A controlled breath-hold descent to a set shallow depth and return. Scored on control, easy equalisation and calm — never on how deep.
Technical Figures
M04
Compulsory Figures
Judged
Five set elements on one breath — dolphin arch, vertical descent, barrel roll, back-tuck, bottom handstand. Clean execution is everything.
M05
Pose Flow
Judged
Move through five named poses, holding each, with seamless transitions. Stability, line and breath control under the eye.
M06
Fluid Path
Judged
Swim a marked underwater pattern on a single breath — a water-ballet floor routine of precision and control.
Artistry
M07
Freeform Performance
Judged · Signature
A choreographed solo routine to music. Artistry, difficulty and expression — the discipline the champion is remembered for.
M08
The Portrait
Judged · Image
Hold expressive poses for an underwater photographer; the resulting still is judged — line, emotion, the illusion of ease.
M09
The Story
Judged
A longer narrative performance — a story told underwater. Concept, emotion and complete command of the water.
M10
Character & Craft
Judged
The persona and its world — tail, styling, concept. The craft and originality of the character you bring to the water.
Partner & Safety
M11
Duo Synchro
Judged · Pair
Two performers, one routine, in perfect synchrony. Timing and shared artistry, breath for breath.
M12
The Rescue
Mandatory · Pass/Fail
A freedive-safety scenario — recognise a shallow-water blackout, bring your buddy up and recover them. No pass, no podium.
Drama
M13
Luminescence
Judged
An after-dark performance lit only by glow and light. Drama, timing and cinematic presence in the black water.
M14
Open Water
Elite / World only
The ultimate test — perform in open ocean over reef, not a pool. Composure in the real water, where the Muse becomes the water.

How A Season Runs

SUBMIT · VOTE · JUDGE · FINAL

The Muse is a global remote qualifier that ends live in the Maldives. The crowd drives the reach; the judges protect the crown.

01
SUBMIT

Enter with a short underwater film and stills. Open worldwide — pool or ocean. A signed release and a safety attestation are required.

02
THE VOTE

Every valid entry goes public. The crowd's votes pick the finalists — every entrant brings their own audience.

03
THE JUDGES

An expert panel — freedivers, performers, underwater cinematographers — scores the finalists against the rubric.

04
THE FINAL

Finalists perform live at the Maldives Final. One is crowned — and filmed. A People's Choice is crowned by the crowd.

How It's Scored

THE RUBRIC · 100 POINTS

30 PTS
Grace & Fluidity
Looking like you belong underwater — the core of Become the Water.
25 PTS
Breath & Stillness
Calm, comfort, no visible struggle; the ease and length of the hold.
25 PTS
Artistry & Expression
Storytelling, musicality, styling — the emotional read of the piece.
20 PTS
Technical Difficulty
The hard moves — power, control and the elements attempted.

Each discipline is judged out of 1000. Performing in open water over reef earns a difficulty bonus. Categories mirror the Trial: Open Solo · Masters 40+ · Duo & Pod · Junior · National — plus a crowd-crowned People's Choice.

⚠ Safety Is The Standard

The Muse is breath-hold, so it carries freediving's real risk — shallow-water blackout, which gives no warning. No one ever performs alone: every in-water discipline requires a trained safety freediver in direct sight, a shallow depth cap, no hyperventilation, and a medic at every live event. Grace is never worth a life.

The Final

IT ALL ENDS IN ONE PLACE

Every entry, every vote, every round leads to one night — the qualified gather at a single five-star Maldives island and perform, live, for the crown. The place is revealed only to those who make it.
